The witr prayer

صلاة الوتر

The odd-numbered prayer that ends the night: its ruling, how many rak'ahs, and the Hanafi way.

Sahih

The Prophet ﷺ said that the night prayer is two by two, and when one fears the dawn, one prays a single rak'ah to make what one has prayed odd (al-Bukhari 990), and he told people to make witr the last of their prayer at night (al-Bukhari 998).

The schools differ on whether it is wajib or a stressed Sunnah, and on whether it may be a single rak'ah.

Its ruling

  1. Its ruling

The witr prayer, at the end of the night prayer.

    Hanafi: wajibMost scholars: sunnah

    Where the schools differ

Wajib for Abu Hanifa, and a narration from him says obligatory; a stressed Sunnah for the majority, the Malikis, Shafi'is and Hanbalis, who cite the man who asked whether anything was due on him besides the five prayers and was told no, unless he prayed voluntarily. islamweb's fatwa prefers the majority view.

How it is prayed

  1. How it is prayed

Pray an odd number of rak'ahs.

    Where the schools differ

For the Hanafis witr is three rak'ahs joined, sitting for the tashahhud after the second and giving the salam only at the end, and a single rak'ah is not allowed. For the majority a single rak'ah is enough, and three, five or seven are more complete; when praying three, islamweb's fatwa says they should not be prayed like maghrib, but with a salam after two or all joined without sitting after the second.

  2. How it is prayed

The supplication of qunut in witr.

    Where the schools differ

For the Hanafis, after the recitation in the third rak'ah one says the takbir while standing and makes the qunut supplication, then bows; in the Hanafi way the first rak'ah has al-A'la, the second al-Kafirun and the third al-Ikhlas.

  3. How it is prayed

    If you missed it.

    Where the schools differ

For the Hanafis, since it is wajib, it must be prayed standing and made up whenever it is missed. For the majority making it up is recommended, not required; islamweb's fatwa says it may be made up during the day as an even number.

Narrated Ibn `Umar: Once a person asked Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) about the night prayer. Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) replied, "The night prayer is offered as two Rak`at followed by two Rak`at and so on and if anyone is afraid of the approaching dawn (Fajr prayer) he should pray one Rak`ah and this will be a Witr for all the Rak`at which he has prayed before
