The prayer of istikhara

صلاة الاستخارة

Asking Allah to choose for you in a lawful matter: two rak'ahs, then the supplication the Prophet ﷺ taught.

Sahih

Jabir reports that the Prophet ﷺ taught them istikhara in all their affairs as he taught them a surah of the Quran: when one of you is concerned about a matter, let him pray two rak'ahs other than the obligatory prayer, and then say the supplication (al-Bukhari 1166).

It is for lawful matters only, not for what is already known to be obligatory, recommended, forbidden or disliked. islamweb's fatwas set out its time, the place of the supplication, and repeating it.

Your choice is kept on this device, and in the page address so a link you share shows it too.

When

  1. When

Only in a lawful matter where you must choose, great or small.

Sources: How istikhara is prayed (islamweb fatwa 61077); The istikhara prayer in detail (islamweb fatwa 75167)

  2. When

At any time except the three disliked times: after fajr, after 'asr, and when the sun is at its height. If you make istikhara with the supplication after an obligatory prayer such as fajr or 'asr, there is no objection.

    Where the schools differ

The Shafi'is allow the two rak'ahs in the disliked times inside the sanctuary of Makkah.

How it is done

  1. How it is done

Pray two rak'ahs other than the obligatory prayer.

    Where the schools differ

islamweb's fatwa says most scholars recommend reciting al-Kafirun in the first and al-Ikhlas in the second.

Sources: Sahih al-Bukhari 1166; How istikhara is prayed (islamweb fatwa 61077)

  2. How it is done

Then say the supplication the Prophet ﷺ taught, naming your matter where it says 'this matter'.

    Where the schools differ

On its place: islamweb's fatwa holds it is said after the salam, from the word 'then' in the hadith; Ibn Hajar allowed before or after, and Ibn Taymiyyah preferred before the salam. On naming the matter: Ibn Hajar took the hadith's wording to mean at the end, others in the middle, at 'this matter'.

Sources: Sahih al-Bukhari 1166; Where the supplication of istikhara is said (islamweb fatwa 3534); How istikhara is prayed (islamweb fatwa 61077)

  3. How it is done

Then go ahead with what your heart has come to rest on.

    Where the schools differ

If nothing becomes clear, the Hanafis, Malikis and Shafi'is say the istikhara should be repeated, prayer and supplication, up to seven times; islamweb's fatwa adds that it is not repeated once you have gone ahead.

Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah:The Prophet (ﷺ) used to teach us the way of doing Istikhara (Istikhara means to ask Allah to guide one to the right sort of action concerning any job or a deed), in all matters as he taught us the Suras of the Qur'an. He said, "If anyone of you thinks of doing any job he should offer a two rak`at prayer other than the compulsory ones and say (after the prayer): -- 'Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi'ilmika, Wa astaqdiruka bi-qudratika, Wa as'alaka min fadlika Al-`azlm Fa-innaka taqdiru Wala aqdiru, Wa ta'lamu Wala a'lamu, Wa anta 'allamu l-ghuyub. Allahumma, in kunta ta'lam anna hadha-lamra Khairun li fi dini wa ma'ashi wa'aqibati `Amri (or 'ajili `Amri wa'ajilihi) Faqdirhu wa yas-sirhu li thumma barik li Fihi, Wa in kunta ta'lamu anna hadha-lamra shar-run li fi dini wa ma'ashi wa'aqibati `Amri (or fi'ajili `Amri wa ajilihi) Fasrifhu anni was-rifni anhu. Waqdir li al-khaira haithu kana Thumma ardini bihi.' (O Allah! I ask guidance from Your knowledge, And Power from Your Might and I ask for Your great blessings. You are capable and I am not. You know and I do not and You know the unseen. O Allah! If You know that this job is good for my religion and my subsistence and in my Hereafter--(or said: If it is better for my present and later needs)--Then You ordain it for me and make it easy for me to get, And then bless me in it, and if You know that this job is harmful to me In my religion and subsistence and in the Hereafter--(or said: If it is worse for my present and later needs)--Then keep it away from me and let me be away from it. And ordain for me whatever is good for me, And make me satisfied with it). The Prophet (ﷺ) added that then the person should name (mention) his need
