Say Allāhu akbar three times and recite 43:13-14, then: O Allah, we ask You on this journey of ours for righteousness and piety, and for deeds that please You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and fold up its distance. O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the One who looks after the family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardship of travel, from a distressing sight, and from an evil return to wealth and family.

Once

Returning from a journey

Sahih

Āyibūna, tāʾibūna, ʿābidūna, li-rabbinā ḥāmidūn.

Returning, repenting, worshipping, and praising our Lord.

Note: On returning, the Prophet ﷺ said the words of the journey's du'a again and added these.

Once

Stopping at a place

Sahih

Aʿūdhu bi-kalimātillāhit-tāmmāti min sharri mā khalaq.

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.

Virtue: Nothing will harm him until he moves on from that place.

Once

Distress and worry

In distress

Sahih

Lā ilāha illallāhul-ʿaẓīmul-ḥalīm, lā ilāha illallāhu rabbus-samāwāti wal-arḍ, rabbul-ʿarshil-ʿaẓīm.

There is no god but Allah, the Mighty, the Forbearing. There is no god but Allah, Lord of the heavens and the earth, Lord of the mighty Throne.

Once

Refuge from worry and grief

Sahih

Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika minal-hammi wal-ḥazan, wal-ʿajzi wal-kasal, wal-bukhli wal-jubn, wa ḍalaʿid-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijāl.

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, from helplessness and laziness, from miserliness and cowardice, and from the burden of debt and being overpowered by men.

Note: Anas, who served the Prophet ﷺ, heard him say it often.

Once

Illness

Visiting the sick

Sahih

Lā baʾs, ṭahūrun in shāʾ Allāh.

No harm: a purification, if Allah wills.

Once

Seeking guidance

The prayer for guidance (istikhara)

Sahih

O Allah, I ask You to choose for me by Your knowledge, and I ask You for ability by Your power, and I ask You of Your great bounty; for You are able and I am not, You know and I do not, and You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allah, if You know that this matter is good for me in my religion, my livelihood and the outcome of my affairs, then decree it for me, make it easy for me, and bless me in it. And if You know that this matter is bad for me in my religion, my livelihood and the outcome of my affairs, then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and decree for me the good wherever it may be, then make me content with it.

Note: It is said after praying two rak'ahs that are not obligatory, naming one's need in place of 'this matter'. The narration gives a second wording, 'my affairs now and later', in place of 'the outcome of my affairs'.

Once

Sneezing

On sneezing

Sahih

Whoever sneezes says al-ḥamdu lillāh (praise be to Allah). His brother or companion answers yarḥamukAllāh (may Allah have mercy on you), and he replies yahdīkumullāhu wa yuṣliḥu bālakum (may Allah guide you and set your affairs right).

Once

Rain and wind

When it rains

Sahih

Ṣayyiban nāfiʿā.

A beneficial rain.

Once

When the wind blows strongly

Sahih

Allāhumma innī asʾaluka khayrahā wa khayra mā fīhā wa khayra mā ursilat bih, wa aʿūdhu bika min sharrihā wa sharri mā fīhā wa sharri mā ursilat bih.

O Allah, I ask You for its good, the good within it and the good it was sent with, and I seek refuge in You from its evil, the evil within it and the evil it was sent with.

Once

At any time

I am pleased with Allah as my Lord

Sahih

Raḍītu billāhi rabbā, wa bil-islāmi dīnā, wa bi-Muḥammadin rasūlā.

I am pleased with Allah as Lord, with Islam as religion and with Muhammad as Messenger.

Virtue: Paradise becomes his due.
