Hajj

الحج

The pilgrimage to the House in Makkah, once in a lifetime for whoever is able to make the journey.

Quran

Explained

The fifth pillar is the pilgrimage to the House in Makkah in the months of Hajj, required once in a lifetime of whoever is able to make the journey (3:97): of age, of sound mind, free, and with the means and a safe way there.

The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever performs Hajj for Allah without obscenity or wrongdoing returns as free of sin as on the day his mother bore him. He performed it once, in the Farewell Pilgrimage, and taught the rites there.

Evidence

QuranAal-i-Imraan (The Family of Imraan)Quran 3:97

In it are clear signs [such as] the standing place of Abraham. And whoever enters it [i.e., the Ḥaram] shall be safe. And [due] to Allāh from the people is a pilgrimage to the House - for whoever is able to find thereto a way. But whoever disbelieves [i.e., refuses] - then indeed, Allāh is free from need of the worlds.[140]

97. In it are manifest signs (for example), the Maqâm (place) of Ibrâhîm (Abraham); whosoever enters it, he attains security. And Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah) to the House (Ka‘bah ) is a duty that mankind owes to Allâh, those who can afford the expenses (for one’s conveyance, provision and residence); and whoever disbelieves [i.e. denies Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah), then he is a disbeliever of Allâh], then Allâh stands not in need of any of the ‘Âlamîn (mankind, jinn and all that exists)[19].

[19] (V.3:97) a) The performance of Hajj is an enjoined duty and its superiority, and the Statement of Allâh عز وجل: "Hajj (pilgrimage) to the House (Ka‘bah), is a duty that mankind owes to Allâh, those who can afford the expenses (for one’s conveyance, provision and residence); and whoever disbelieves [i.e. denies Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah), then he is a disbeliever of Allâh], then Allâh stands not in need of any of the ‘Âlamîn." (V.3:97) (Sahih Al-Bukhâri, Vol.2, Chapter 1, The Book of Hajj, P. 344). b) Islâm demolishes all the previous evil deeds and so do migration (for Allâh’s sake) and Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah) [Al-Lû’lû wal-Marjân] (Sahih Muslim ).
