Daily SunnahPurification

The bath on Friday

غسل الجمعة

Whoever comes to the Friday prayer should bathe first; most scholars hold it a stressed Sunnah.

Sahih

The practice

Ibn 'Umar reports in al-Bukhari that the Prophet ﷺ told whoever comes to the Friday prayer to take a bath.

islamweb's fatwa quotes an-Nawawi: a group of the early scholars, and the Zahiris, held it obligatory, while most scholars held it a recommended Sunnah. They cite 'Umar letting 'Uthman pray without having bathed, and read the word 'obligatory' in the hadith as 'strongly stressed'. Ibn Hazm argued for the first view.
