The practice

Abu Hurayrah reports in al-Bukhari that the Prophet ﷺ told whoever puts on his shoes to begin with the right, and whoever takes them off to begin with the left, so that the right is the first shod and the last bared.

islamweb's fatwa adds 'A'isha's report that the Prophet ﷺ liked to begin with the right in putting on his shoes, combing his hair, purifying himself and in all his affairs, and Ibn Hajar's note that it means starting with the right foot in shoes and the left in removing them.

Narrated Abu Huraira:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "If you want to put on your shoes, put on the right shoe first; and if you want to take them off, take the left one first. Let the right shoe be the first to be put on and the last to be taken off
