Luqman

Life

Allah says He gave Luqman wisdom and told him to be grateful (31:12), and the surah named after him records his counsel to his son: not to associate partners with Allah, to establish the prayer, enjoin good and forbid wrong, be patient, and walk and speak with humility (31:13-19). As-Sa'di explains wisdom as knowing the truth as it is and acting on it: one can be learned without being wise.

As-Sa'di notes that the commentators differ on whether Luqman was a prophet or a righteous servant, since Allah mentions only that He gave him wisdom. islamweb's fatwa says the preferred view of scholars is that he was a righteous servant, and quotes Ibn Kathir that the majority hold he was a wise man and a friend of Allah, not a prophet; it is said he lived in the time of Dawud.
