Wudu, step by step

How to make wudu: what all four schools require, the Sunnah of it, and what breaks it, with each school’s view where they differ.

Quran

Wudu is washing certain limbs with water, with the intention of purifying oneself for prayer. No prayer is accepted from one who has broken his wudu until he renews it, the Prophet ﷺ said.

All four schools agree on its core, the four acts named in the verse of wudu (5:6): washing the face, washing the arms to the elbows, wiping the head, and washing the feet to the ankles. Everything else below is either agreed Sunnah or a point where the schools differ, and each step says which.

Your choice is kept on this device, and in the page address so a link you share shows it too.

Before you begin

  1. Before you begin

Intend in your heart that you are making wudu for the prayer. The intention is in the heart; it does not need to be said aloud.

Hanafi: sunnahShafi'i: pillarMost scholars: required (condition or pillar)

    Where the schools differ

islamweb's fatwa: for most scholars the intention is a condition of wudu or one of its pillars, on the hadith that deeds are by intentions; Abu Hanifa differs. Al-Kasani counts it among the Sunnahs of wudu in the Hanafi school, and says ash-Shafi'i holds it obligatory.

Sources: Sahih al-Bukhari 1; Forgetting the intention in wudu (islamweb fatwa 139359); al-Kasani, Bada'i as-Sana'i: the Sunnahs of wudu (islamweb library)

  2. Before you begin

Say 'Bismillah' (in the name of Allah) as you begin.

    Hanbali: wajibMost scholars: sunnah

    Where the schools differ

In the relied-upon Hanbali view it is wajib, and the obligation lapses if you forget; for the majority it is a Sunnah, and wudu is valid without it. The hadith that there is no wudu without mentioning Allah's name is weak according to most scholars; al-Albani and others authenticated it through its several chains. islamweb's fatwa leans to the majority view.

Sources: Sunan Abi Dawud 101; Saying bismillah in wudu is a Sunnah for the majority (islamweb fatwa 124839)

The washing, in order

  1. The washing, in order

Wash your hands up to the wrists, three times.

    Sources: Sahih al-Bukhari 159

  2. The washing, in order

Take water into your mouth, move it around and spit it out, three times.

    Hanafi: sunnahMaliki: sunnahShafi'i: sunnahHanbali: pillar

    Where the schools differ

Obligatory in the well-known Hanbali view, in wudu and in ghusl; a Sunnah for the Malikis and Shafi'is; the Hanafis require it in ghusl but not in wudu. islamweb's fatwa prefers that it is a Sunnah, and advises doing it anyway, as the more cautious course.

Sources: The scholars' views on rinsing the mouth and nose in wudu and ghusl (islamweb fatwa 17079)

  3. The washing, in order

Draw water into your nose and blow it out, three times.

    Hanafi: sunnahMaliki: sunnahShafi'i: sunnahHanbali: pillar

    Where the schools differ

As with rinsing the mouth: obligatory for the Hanbalis, a Sunnah in wudu for the other three schools.

Sources: The scholars' views on rinsing the mouth and nose in wudu and ghusl (islamweb fatwa 17079)

  4. The washing, in order

Wash your face, from the hairline to the chin and from ear to ear, three times.

    All four schools: pillar

    Sources: 5:6; Sahih al-Bukhari 159

  5. The washing, in order

Wash your right arm from the fingertips up to and including the elbow, three times, then the left.

    All four schools: pillar

    Sources: 5:6; Sahih al-Bukhari 159

  6. The washing, in order

Wipe over your head with wet hands: from the front to the back of the head and back again.

    All four schools: pillar

    Where the schools differ

How much must be wiped: the whole head for Malik, and for Ahmad in his well-known view; part of it is enough for ash-Shafi'i and the Hanafis, as Ibn Qudama sets out. How often: once for Abu Hanifa, Malik and Ahmad in his well-known view; ash-Shafi'i and most of his followers repeat it. islamweb's fatwa prefers wiping the whole head, once.

Sources: 5:6; Sahih al-Bukhari 185; Ibn Qudama, al-Mughni: the obligation to wipe the head (islamweb library); How many times the head and ears are wiped in wudu (islamweb fatwa 132813); On wiping the head in wudu (islamweb fatwa 111296)

  7. The washing, in order

Wipe your ears, inside and out, with the same wet fingers.

    Where the schools differ

islamweb's fatwa counts the ears as part of the head, so they take the same ruling, once or three times as above.

Sources: How many times the head and ears are wiped in wudu (islamweb fatwa 132813)

  8. The washing, in order

Wash your right foot up to and including the ankle, three times, then the left, making sure the water reaches between the toes and the heels.

    All four schools: pillar

    Sources: 5:6; Sahih al-Bukhari 60

Throughout

  1. Throughout

Keep to the order of the verse: face, arms, head, feet.

    Hanafi: sunnahMaliki: sunnahShafi'i: pillarHanbali: pillar

    Where the schools differ

Obligatory for the Shafi'is and, in the relied-upon view, the Hanbalis; a Sunnah for the Hanafis and, in the well-known view, the Malikis. islamweb's fatwa advises keeping to it.

Sources: The schools on the order of washing the limbs in wudu (islamweb fatwa 439414); The obligatory parts of wudu, agreed and disputed (islamweb fatwa 3682)

  2. Throughout

Wash each limb straight after the one before, without a pause long enough for it to dry.

    Hanafi: sunnahMaliki: pillarShafi'i: sunnahHanbali: pillar

    Where the schools differ

Obligatory for Malik and Ahmad; a Sunnah for ash-Shafi'i and Abu Hanifa.

Sources: The obligatory parts of wudu, agreed and disputed (islamweb fatwa 3682)

  3. Throughout

Washing each limb once is the minimum; washing it three times is the Sunnah.

    Sources: Sahih al-Bukhari 157; Sahih al-Bukhari 159

  4. Throughout

Begin with the right before the left, for the arms and the feet.

After wudu

  1. After wudu

After wudu, bear witness to the oneness of Allah and that Muhammad ﷺ is His servant and Messenger, with the words the Prophet ﷺ taught.

What breaks wudu

  1. What breaks wudu

Anything that comes out of the front or back passage: urine, stool, wind.

    All four schools: breaks it

Sources: 4:43; Sahih al-Bukhari 137; What breaks wudu, agreed and disputed (islamweb fatwa 1795)

  2. What breaks wudu

Losing consciousness: deep sleep, fainting, insanity or intoxication.

    All four schools: breaks it

    Where the schools differ

islamweb's fatwa adds that light sleep while sitting or standing does not break wudu, since the Companions would doze waiting for the prayer and then pray without renewing it.

Sources: What breaks wudu, agreed and disputed (islamweb fatwa 1795)

  3. What breaks wudu

Touching one's private part directly with the hand.

Hanafi: does not break itMaliki: breaks itShafi'i: breaks itHanbali: breaks it

    Where the schools differ

It breaks wudu for the majority, the Malikis, Shafi'is and Hanbalis, when the hand touches without a barrier: for the Shafi'is only with the palm, for the Hanbalis with the palm or the back of the hand. In Abu Hanifa's school it does not break wudu. islamweb's fatwa prefers the majority view.

Sources: Jami' at-Tirmidhi 82; Questions on touching the private parts and wudu (islamweb fatwa 132669); Praying unaware that touching the private part breaks wudu (islamweb fatwa 51350)

  4. What breaks wudu

A man and a woman who is not his mahram touching skin to skin.

Hanafi: does not break itMaliki: breaks itShafi'i: breaks itHanbali: breaks it

    Where the schools differ

For the Shafi'is it breaks wudu in any case. For the Malikis only if the one who touches intends pleasure or feels it; for the Hanbalis only skin to skin and with desire. For the Hanafis it never breaks wudu. The schools agree that touching a mahram, such as a mother or daughter, does not. islamweb's fatwas prefer that it does not break wudu unless something comes out.

Sources: 4:43; The scholars' views on wudu after touching a woman (islamweb fatwa 95850); The scholars' views on wudu after touching a woman without desire (islamweb fatwa 41160)

  5. What breaks wudu

    Eating camel meat.

Hanbali: breaks itMost scholars: does not break it

    Where the schools differ

It breaks wudu for Imam Ahmad and those who agree with him, after the hadith in Muslim; most scholars hold that it does not. islamweb's fatwa quotes an-Nawawi that Ahmad's view has the stronger evidence, though the majority differ.

Sources: Sahih Muslim 360a; Eating camel meat, and whether it breaks wudu (islamweb fatwa 108507)

  6. What breaks wudu

    Vomiting.

Hanafi: breaks itMaliki: does not break itShafi'i: does not break itHanbali: breaks it

    Where the schools differ

For the Hanafis vomit that fills the mouth breaks wudu; for the Hanbalis, in their well-known view, a large amount does, and a little does not; for the Malikis and Shafi'is it does not break wudu, little or much. islamweb's fatwa prefers that it does not, and that making wudu after it is recommended.

O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles. And if you are in a state of janābah,[245] then purify yourselves. But if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women[246] and do not find water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and hands with it. Allāh does not intend to make difficulty for you, but He intends to purify you and complete His favor upon you that you may be grateful.

6. O you who believe! When you intend to offer As-Salât (the prayer), wash your faces and your hands (forearms) up to the elbows, rub (by passing wet hands over) your heads, and (wash) your feet up to ankles[3]. If you are in a state of Janâba (i.e. after a sexual discharge), purify yourselves (bathe your whole body). But if you are ill or on a journey, or any of you comes after answering the call of nature, or you have been in contact with women (i.e. sexual intercourse), and you find no water, then perform Tayammum with clean earth and rub therewith your faces and hands.[4] Allâh does not want to place you in difficulty, but He wants to purify you, and to complete His Favour to you that you may be thankful.

[3] (V.5:6) The superiority of ablution. And Al-Ghurr-ul Muhajjalûn (the parts of the body of the Muslims washed in ablution will shine on the Day of Resurrection and the angels will call them by that name) from the traces of ablution. Narrated Nu‘aim Al-Mujmir: Once I went up the roof of the mosque along with Abu Hurairah He performed ablution and said, "I heard the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم saying, ‘On the Day of Resurrection, my followers will be called Al-Ghurr-ul-Muhajjalûn from the traces of ablution and whoever can increase the area of his radiance* should do so (by performing ablution in the most perfect manner).’ " (Sahih Al-Bukhâri, Vol.1, Hadîth No.138). *The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم did not increase the area more than what is washed of the body parts while doing ablution as Allâh ordered to be washed in the Qur’ân. [For details about Wudu (ablution), see Sahih Al-Bukhâri, Vol.1, (The Book of Ablution)]. [4] (V.5:6) Strike your hands on the earth and then pass the palm of each on the back of the other and then blow off the dust from them and then pass (rub) them on your face: this is called Tayammum

Uqba b. 'Amir al-Juhani reported:Verily the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said and then narrated (the hadith) like one (mentioned above) except (this) that he said: He who performed ablution and said: I testify that there is no god but Allah, the One, there is no associate with Him and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger

O you who have believed, do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated until you know what you are saying[187] or in a state of janābah,[188] except those passing through [a place of prayer], until you have washed [your whole body]. And if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women [i.e., had sexual intercourse] and find no water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and your hands [with it]. Indeed, Allāh is ever Pardoning[189] and Forgiving.

Translator's notes

[187] The use of intoxicants was later prohibited completely. See 5:90-91. [188] Literally, "distance." The state of one under obligation to perform ghusl (a complete bath) due to having had sexual intercourse or ejaculation. [189] Literally, able to erase and remove sins completely, leaving no trace of them in the record of deeds.

Saheeh International · QuranEnc v1.1.2

Another translation: Al-Hilali & Muhsin Khan · QuranEnc v1.1.2

43. O you who believe! Approach not As-Salât (the prayer) when you are in a drunken state until you know (the meaning) of what you utter, nor when you are in a state of Janâba ,(i.e. in a state of sexual impurity and have not yet taken a bath) except when travelling on the road (without enough water, or just passing through a mosque), till you wash your whole body. And if you are ill, or on a journey, or one of you comes after answering the call of nature, or you have been in contact with women (by sexual relations) and you find no water, perform Tayammum with clean earth and rub therewith your faces and hands (Tayammum)[14]. Truly, Allâh is Ever Oft-Pardoning, Oft-Forgiving.

[14] (V.4:43) Strike your hands on the earth and then pass the palm of each on the back of the other and then blow off the dust from them and then pass (rub) them on your face, this is called Tayammum

He (the Messenger of Allah) said: Perform ablution it you so desire, and if you do not wish, do not perform it. He (again) asked: Should I perform ablution (after eating) camel's flesh? He said: Yes, perform ablution (after eating) camel's flesh. He (again) said: May I say prayer in the sheepfolds? He (the Messenger of Allah) said: Yes. He (the narrator) again said: May I say prayer where camels lie down? He (the Holy Prophet) said: No
