Sujud at-tilawa, the prostration of recitation

سجود التلاوة

A single prostration when reciting or hearing one of the verses of prostration: its ruling, how it is done, and the places in the Quran.

Quran

When the reader of the Quran, or one who listens, reaches a verse of prostration, he prostrates once, in the prayer or outside it. 'Umar prostrated at one from the pulpit, and the next Friday did not, saying that whoever prostrates has done well and whoever does not has done no wrong.

islamweb's fatwa counts fifteen places, after the hadith of 'Amr ibn al-'As, which al-Mundhiri graded hasan; the graders in our collection, al-Albani, Shu'ayb al-Arna'ut, Zubair Ali Zai and Muhammad Muhyi ad-Din, grade it weak. Where the schools differ on a place, it is named below.

Your choice is kept on this device, and in the page address so a link you share shows it too.

Its ruling and way

  1. Its ruling and way

Most scholars hold it a Sunnah for the reader and the listener; whoever leaves it commits no sin.

    Most scholars: sunnah

Sources: Sahih al-Bukhari 1077; No sin on whoever leaves the prostration of recitation (islamweb fatwa 53317)

  2. Its ruling and way

Prostrate once when you reach the verse. In the prayer, prostrate straight away, then stand and carry on.

    All four schools: description

    Where the schools differ

The Hanafis allow the bowing of the prayer, or its prostration, to stand in for it if done right after the verse; for the majority it does not.

Where the schools differ

  1. Where the schools differ

    Three places are disputed.

    Where the schools differ

Sad: ash-Shafi'i counts it a prostration of thanks, not of recitation. The second in al-Hajj: Abu Hanifa and Malik do not count it, taking the verse to be about the prayer, since it mentions bowing too. The three in the last part of the Quran (an-Najm, al-Inshiqaq, al-'Alaq): Malik does not count them; an-Nawawi called that view weak, since Abu Hurayra reports prostrating at al-Inshiqaq and al-'Alaq. islamweb's fatwa holds the fifteen the stronger view.

Narrated Rabi`a:`Umar bin Al-Khattab recited Surat-an-Nahl on a Friday on the pulpit and when he reached the verse of Sajda he got down from the pulpit and prostrated and the people also prostrated. The next Friday `Umar bin Al-Khattab recited the same Sura and when he reached the verse of Sajda he said, "O people! When we recite the verses of Sajda (during the sermon) whoever prostrates does the right thing, yet it is no sin for the one who does not prostrate." And `Umar did not prostrate (that day).
