The event

Banu Bakr, allies of Quraysh, raided Khuza'a, allies of the Muslims, with Quraysh's help, breaking the treaty of al-Hudaybiyya. In Ramadan of 8 AH the Prophet ﷺ marched with about ten thousand, keeping it secret so Quraysh would not prepare for war. Abu Sufyan came out, accepted Islam, and whoever entered his house was declared safe.

The army entered Makkah with little resistance. The Prophet ﷺ struck down the idols around the Ka'ba while reciting that the truth has come and falsehood has vanished (17:81), and then pardoned the people of Makkah.
