About this place

The Quran calls Thamud the people of al-Hijr (15:80), who carved homes out of the mountains (7:74). Ibn 'Ashur places al-Hijr at Wadi al-Qura, between Madinah and Syria, known today as Mada'in Salih on the road from Khaybar to Tabuk.
