Parables of the QuranA parable of the Quran · Al-Baqara 2:264–265

The smooth rock and the garden on the hill

Charity spoiled by reminders is dust on a bare rock; charity for Allah's pleasure is a garden on high ground.

Quran

What it means

Charity cancelled by reminders of the favour and by harm, or given to be seen, is like dust on a smooth rock: heavy rain falls and leaves it bare (2:264). Charity given for Allah's pleasure and from firm conviction is like a garden on a hill: heavy rain doubles its yield, and even a drizzle is enough (2:265).

As-Sa'di adds that these examples apply to every good deed, so that each person weighs his own deeds by them.

QuranAl-Baqara (The Cow)Quran 2:264

O you who have believed, do not invalidate your charities with reminders [of it] or injury as does one who spends his wealth [only] to be seen by the people and does not believe in Allāh and the Last Day. His example is like that of a [large] smooth stone upon which is dust and is hit by a downpour that leaves it bare. They are unable [to keep] anything of what they have earned. And Allāh does not guide the disbelieving people.

264. O you who believe! Do not render in vain your Sadaqah (charity) by reminders of your generosity or by injury, like him who spends his wealth to be seen of men, and he does not believe in Allâh, nor in the Last Day. His likeness is the likeness of a smooth rock on which is a little dust; on it falls heavy rain which leaves it bare. They are not able to do anything with what they have earned. And Allâh does not guide the disbelieving people.

And the example of those who spend their wealth seeking means to the approval of Allāh and assuring [reward for] themselves is like a garden on high ground which is hit by a downpour - so it yields its fruits in double. And [even] if it is not hit by a downpour, then a drizzle [is sufficient]. And Allāh, of what you do, is Seeing.

Saheeh International · QuranEnc v1.1.2

Another translation: Al-Hilali & Muhsin Khan · QuranEnc v1.1.2

265. And the likeness of those who spend their wealth seeking Allâh’s Pleasure while they in their ownselves are sure and certain that Allâh will reward them (for their spending in His Cause), is the likeness of a garden on a height; heavy rain falls on it and it doubles its yield of harvest. And if it does not receive heavy rain, light rain suffices it. And Allâh is All-Seer (knows well) of what you do.
