Parables of the QuranA parable of the Quran · Ibrahim 14:24–26

The good word and the good tree

مثل الكلمة الطيبة والشجرة الطيبة

A good word is like a good tree, rooted firm with its branches in the sky; a bad word is a tree torn up.

Quran

What it means

Allah likens a good word to a good tree whose root is firm and whose branches are in the sky, giving its fruit at all times by its Lord's leave; and a bad word to a bad tree uprooted from the earth, with no stability (14:24–26).

As-Sa'di explains that the good word is the testimony that there is no god but Allah, and the good tree the palm. Faith in the believer's heart is like it: its root is knowledge and conviction, its branches good speech, deeds and character, rising to Allah and benefiting others. The bad word is disbelief and sin, which have no firm hold.

QuranIbrahim (Abraham)Quran 14:24

Have you not considered how Allāh presents an example, [making] a good word like a good tree, whose root is firmly fixed and its branches [high] in the sky?

24. See you not how Allâh sets forth a parable? A goodly word as a goodly tree, whose root is firmly fixed, and its branches (reach) to the sky (i.e. very high).
