An-Nawawi's Forty HadithHadith 9

Do what you are able of what you are commanded

Keep away from all that is forbidden, do what you can of what is commanded, and do not burden yourself with needless questions.

Sahih

The hadith

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (ra): I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say, “What I have forbidden for you, avoid. What I have ordered you [to do], do as much of it as you can. For verily, it was only the excessive questioning and their disagreeing with their Prophets that destroyed [the nations] who were before you.” [Bukhari & Muslim]

Lessons

What is forbidden must be avoided entirely, and kept far from; what is commanded is done as far as one is able, since Allah wants ease (2:185), and from this the scholars took the rule that hardship brings relief. Questions should be asked for need, not for argument or hypotheticals; the excessive questioning of earlier nations made things harder for them.

In practice: make leaving sins a core part of your worship, and ask about what you actually need to know.

Narrated Abu Huraira:The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Leave me as I leave you, for the people who were before you were ruined because of their questions and their differences over their prophets. So, if I forbid you to do something, then keep away from it. And if I order you to do something, then do of it as much as you can

Abu Huraira reported that he heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:Avoid that which I forbid you to do and do that which I command you to do to the best of your capacity. Verily the people before you went to their doom because they had put too many questions to their Prophets and then disagreed with their teachings
