The hadith

On the authority of Abdullah, the son of Umar ibn al-Khattab (ra), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say, "Islam has been built on five [pillars]: testifying that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing the salah (prayer), paying the zakat (obligatory charity), making the hajj (pilgrimage) to the House, and fasting in Ramadhan." [Bukhari & Muslim]

Lessons

Islam stands on five pillars: the two testimonies, which together form one pillar of sincerity to Allah and following His Messenger; prayer, the link between the servant and his Lord and the first deed to be judged; zakah, which purifies wealth and the soul; the fast of Ramadan; and Hajj for whoever is able (3:97).

In practice: never leave the prayer, pay zakah when it is due, fast Ramadan with faith and hope of reward, and perform Hajj when you are able.
