The hadith

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Let him who believes in Allah and the Last Day speak good, or keep silent; and let him who believes in Allah and the Last Day be generous to his neighbour; and let him who believes in Allah and the Last Day be generous to his guest. Lessons

Speaking good or keeping silent, honouring one's neighbour and honouring one's guest are signs of complete faith. A single careless word can ruin a person, kindness to neighbours is joined in the Quran with the worship of Allah (4:36), and honouring a guest is part of the tradition of Ibrahim.

In practice: welcome guests warmly within your means, invite the poor as well as the rich, visit and help your neighbours and cover their faults, and weigh your words before you speak.
