Life

He was from Jayy, a village of Isfahan, the son of a landowner, and was raised a devoted fire-worshipper. Drawn by the prayer of Christians, he left home and served one Christian teacher after another, the last of whom told him a prophet would soon appear among the Arabs, with signs to know him by.

Travellers he paid to take him to Arabia sold him as a slave, and a man of Banu Qurayza brought him to Madinah. There he met the Prophet ﷺ, recognised the signs he had been told of, and became Muslim. He bought his freedom by contract, planting three hundred palm trees, with the Prophet ﷺ and the Companions helping, and paying forty uqiyya; the Trench was his first battle as a free man.

The Prophet ﷺ made him a brother to Abu ad-Darda', and affirmed Salman's advice to him to give his Lord, himself and his family each their due. When a verse spoke of others who would join the believers, the Prophet ﷺ put his hand on Salman and said men of his people would reach faith. He died in al-Mada'in, most say in 36 AH, leaving almost nothing; al-Dhahabi rejects the reports that he lived 250 or 350 years, and thinks he did not pass about eighty.

Narrated Abu Juhaifa:The Prophet (ﷺ) made a bond of brotherhood between Salman and Abu Ad-Darda.' Salman paid a visit to Abu Ad-Darda' and found Um Ad-Darda' dressed in shabby clothes and asked her why she was in that state. She replied, "Your brother Abu Ad-Darda' is not interested in (the luxuries of) this world." In the meantime Abu Ad-Darda' came and prepared a meal for Salman. Salman requested Abu Ad- Darda' to eat (with him), but Abu Ad-Darda' said, "I am fasting." Salman said, "I am not going to eat unless you eat." So, Abu Ad-Darda' ate (with Salman). When it was night and (a part of the night passed), Abu Ad-Darda' got up (to offer the night prayer), but Salman told him to sleep and Abu Ad- Darda' slept. After sometime Abu Ad-Darda' again got up but Salman told him to sleep. When it was the last hours of the night, Salman told him to get up then, and both of them offered the prayer. Salman told Abu Ad-Darda', "Your Lord has a right on you, your soul has a right on you, and your family has a right on you; so you should give the rights of all those who has a right on you." Abu Ad- Darda' came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and narrated the whole story. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Salman has spoken the truth

Narrated Abu Huraira:While we were sitting with the Prophet (ﷺ) Surat Al-Jumu'a was revealed to him, and when the Verse, "And He (Allah) has sent him (Muhammad) also to other (Muslims).....' (62.3) was recited by the Prophet, I said, "Who are they, O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)?" The Prophet (ﷺ) did not reply till I repeated my question thrice. At that time, Salman Al-Farisi was with us. So Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) put his hand on Salman, saying, "If Faith were at (the place of) Ath-Thuraiya (pleiades, the highest star), even then (some men or man from these people (i.e. Salman's folk) would attain it
