Life

He was the leader of Banu 'Abd al-Ashhal of al-Aws. He became Muslim through Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr, and then told his people he would not speak with them until they believed; Ibn Ishaq reports that the men and women of his clan became Muslim the same day. He fought at Badr.

At the Trench an arrow cut a vein in his arm. The Prophet ﷺ cauterised it. When Banu Qurayza, who had broken their pact during the siege, surrendered, they accepted him as judge, and the Prophet ﷺ approved his judgement. His wound opened again and he died, in 5 AH, aged thirty-seven as al-Waqidi gives it. The Prophet ﷺ said the Throne of the Most Merciful shook at his death. He was buried in al-Baqi'.
