Known as
Abu Abd ar-Rahman
Died
17 or 18 AH

Life

He was of Banu Jushm of al-Khazraj in Madinah. He became Muslim at about eighteen, was at the pledge of al-'Aqaba as a beardless youth, and fought at Badr at about twenty. The Prophet ﷺ named him among the four from whom to learn the Quran, took his hand and told him he loved him, and taught him a supplication to say after every prayer.

The Prophet ﷺ sent him to Yemen to teach and to collect the zakah. A well-known report has the Prophet ﷺ approve his answer that he would judge by the Book of Allah, then the Sunnah, then his own careful reasoning, but al-Albani and Zubair Ali Zai grade it weak; al-Dhahabi also notes weak chains among the reports in his praise. 'Umar valued him highly. He led the army in Syria after Abu 'Ubayda died in the plague of 'Amwas, and died of it himself in 17 or 18 AH; the reports of his age range from twenty-eight to thirty-eight.

Narrated Masruq:`Abdullah (bin Mas`ud) was mentioned before `Abdullah bin `Amr. The latter said, "That is a man I continue to love because I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) saying, ' Learn the recitation of the Qur'an from (any of these) four persons: `Abdullah bin Masud, Salim the freed slave of Abu Hudhaifa, Ubai bin Ka`b, and Mu`adh bin Jabal." I do not remember whether he mentioned Ubai first or Mu`adh

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas:said When the Messenger of Allah(ﷺ) sent Mu’adh to Yemen, he said to him You are going to a people who are people of the book. So call them to bear witness that there is no diety but Allah, and that I am the Messenger of Allah. If they obey you in this respect, tell them that Allah has prescribed five prayers on them every day and night. If they obey you in this regard tell them that Allah has prescribed sadaqah(zakat) on their property and returned it to their poor. If they obey you in this respect, do not take the best of their property. Beware of the curse of the oppressed, for there is no curtain between it and Allah

Some companions of Mu'adh ibn Jabal said:When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) intended to send Mu'adh ibn Jabal to the Yemen, he asked: How will you judge when the occasion of deciding a case arises? He replied: I shall judge in accordance with Allah's Book. He asked: (What will you do) if you do not find any guidance in Allah's Book? He replied: (I shall act) in accordance with the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). He asked: (What will you do) if you do not find any guidance in the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and in Allah's Book? He replied: I shall do my best to form an opinion and I shall spare no effort. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) then patted him on the breast and said: Praise be to Allah Who has helped the messenger of the Messenger of Allah to find something which pleases the Messenger of Allah
