Life

He was az-Zubayr ibn al-'Awwam of the clan of Asad of Quraysh, known as Abu Abdillah. His mother was Safiyya bint 'Abd al-Muttalib, the Prophet's ﷺ aunt. Al-Dhahabi gives his age on accepting Islam as sixteen, and also reports that it was younger; he emigrated, and is counted the first to draw a sword for Allah's cause.

On the day of the Trench he went to bring news of the enemy, and the Prophet ﷺ said that every prophet has a disciple and that his disciple is az-Zubayr. He was one of the six of 'Umar's council. He was killed in Rajab of 36 AH, on the road after the Battle of the Camel; reports of his age differ.
