Abu al-Yaqzan

Life

His father Yasir came to Makkah from Yemen, of the tribe of Madhhij, and settled there as an ally of Banu Makhzum; his mother was Sumayya, counted the first martyr in Islam. 'Ammar, his parents and his brother 'Abdullah were among the first to become Muslim, and he was one of the seven who declared their Islam openly.

The family was tortured for their faith, and the Prophet ﷺ urged them to be patient, promising them Paradise. 'Ammar later told how he was forced under torture to say what he did not believe, and the Prophet ﷺ reassured him, since his heart was firm in faith. He emigrated to Madinah and fought at Badr and the battles after it.

Abu ad-Darda' described him as the man whom Allah protected from Satan by the Prophet's ﷺ words. Al-Dhahabi reports that he was the first to build a mosque for prayer. He was killed at Siffin, as an old man.
