Life

The younger son of 'Ali and Fatimah, born in Sha'ban of 4 AH. 'Ali said he resembled the Prophet ﷺ from the chest to the feet. When people from Iraq asked Ibn 'Umar about the blood of a mosquito, he reminded them that they had killed the Prophet's grandson, of whom and his brother the Prophet ﷺ said they were his two sweet basils of this world (al-Bukhari 3753).

Al-Dhahabi reports that he was killed on the day of 'Ashura in 61 AH, as the scholars agree, and records Umm Salamah's grief when the news came.

Narrated Ibn Abi Nu'm:A person asked `Abdullah bin `Umar whether a Muslim could kill flies. I heard him saying (in reply). "The people of Iraq are asking about the killing of flies while they themselves murdered the son of the daughter of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) . The Prophet (ﷺ) said, They (i.e. Hasan and Husain) are my two sweet basils in this world
